What is DEXA Body Composition?

DEXA (Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry) is widely regarded as the gold standard for measuring body composition, providing an in-depth analysis of the body's fat, muscle, and bone density. Originally developed to assess bone mineral density for diagnosing osteoporosis, DEXA has evolved into the most accurate method available for analyzing body fat percentage, lean muscle mass, and bone mineral content.

While traditional methods like BMI (Body Mass Index) or skinfold calipers give basic information about your health, DEXA offers a more comprehensive and accurate picture of your body composition allowing you to assess your health in a much more nuanced way.

Benefits of DEXA Body Composition

Accurate Body Fat Measurement:Unlike traditional methods like BMI, which only measures weight and height, DEXA gives a precise percentage of your total body fat. It can even differentiate between subcutaneous fat (the fat under your skin) and visceral fat (fat around internal organs), both of which have different health implications.

Lean Muscle Mass Analysis: DEXA scans show how much lean muscle mass you have and help monitor changes over time, which is critical for athletes or individuals aiming to gain muscle or lose fat. This is especially useful in weight training, fitness programs, or rehabilitation after injury.

Bone Health Assessment: DEXA is most well-known for measuring bone mineral density (BMD). By assessing your bones’ health, it can detect early signs of osteoporosis, a condition where bones become weak and brittle. This can help in taking preventive measures before the condition becomes severe.

Medical-Grade Precision: DEXA scans are highly accurate and give a detailed analysis, unlike other body composition methods that may be prone to human error or give inconsistent results. This makes DEXA a reliable tool for tracking changes in body composition over time.

Non-Invasive and Quick: The DEXA scan is quick and non-invasive. It takes about 10-15 minutes to complete, and the results are available immediately after the scan. There’s no need for extensive preparation, making it a convenient option for regular monitoring of body health.

Track Progress Over Time: One of the key advantages of DEXA is its ability to track changes over time. Whether you are trying to lose weight, gain muscle, or monitor bone density, DEXA provides an ongoing, reliable method of tracking your body’s progress.

  • Do I Need to Prepare for a Dexa Scan?

Please fast at least 2 hours prior and no rigorous exercise where internal fluid levels would be impacted for the scan. You should wear loose, comfortable clothing without metal parts (such as zippers or buttons) that could interfere with the scan. You may be asked to remove jewelry before the procedure.

  • How long does a DEXA scan take?

A DEXA body scan typically takes about 6-8 minutes. It is a quick and non-invasive procedure, and results will be reviewed after with a health team member.

  • What does a DEXA Scan measure?Question

DEXA Scan measures total body weight, fat, visceral fat, lean mass and bone mineral density.

  • How much radiation will I be exposed to?

Radiation exposure is minimal, however if you have a previous health disposition or concern, please discuss with your primary care doctor prior to making an appointment. Women who are pregnant are not advised to have a scan.
